10-Point Assessment

HydraFacial in Southside Jacksonville: The Zero-Downtime Glow Treatment
What HydraFacial Treats and Who It Is For
What makes most people book an appointment?
1) seeing blocked pores;
2) dull/flat/tired-looking skin; or
3) make-up not performing/behaving as it used to.
Three issues, one culprit. Chances are, if you’re seeing all of them, you are experiencing a build-up of sebum/dead skin on the surface of the skin coupled with under-hydration underneath. In our coastal area, we weaken our skin’s protective barrier by skipping out on our moisturizer because our skin is damp from Jacksonville’s humidity. Combine that neglectful attitude with consistent sun exposure year-round and you’re looking at dullness and premature fine lines.
Have you noticed who would be great candidates for HydraFacial?
- Congested skin with blackheads in T-zone, including the nose, chin, and forehead.
- Acne recurs in the same limited areas. The skin is otherwise oily or combination.
- Dry, flaky texture, which leads to patchy looking foundation
- Flat, dull, gray-tinted complexion; early appearance of fine lines.
- Has sensitive skin that can’t tolerate scrubs or strong Chemical Peels.
- Anyone with an upcoming event in a few days who can’t risk redness/peeling.
Ninety percent of the time, it’s because their razor catches on bumpy skin. Teens with mild acne and men are other groups I’m surprised by, as many people think these groups wouldn’t get treatments, but they actually do well with them and men come in more than you’d think.
There are also a few conditions that make HydraFacial a poor choice. You should put HydraFacials on hold if you’re dealing with cold sores, a sunburn, an open wound, or a flare-up in a skin condition until they’ve calmed down/healed. Let me know in advance if you’re pregnant, too, because we’d leave out some of the serums. Also, I’ll be honest, HydraFacials don’t erase pores, treat deep acne scars, or undo years of severe sun damage. These conditions all need help from collagen-stimulating procedures. Microneedling and lasers penetrate much deeper into your skin and are better for more severe cases.
Not sure which bucket you fit into? That’s actually our most common question. It’s the sort of thing that’s easiest to suss out over a 5-minute conversation.
HydraFacial should not be undertaken if you have an active infection, cuts, sunburn or active rash.

HydraFacial Southside Jacksonville Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Inside a Medically-Supervised HydraFacial Visit
Many of you would walk in thinking you’re getting a facial...but its more like having a skin appointment for a consultation lol. We look at your skin, in bright lights and ask a lot of questions. Have you been using retinol? Are you breaking out anywhere? Have you been to a waxing/laser appointment? These are all pertinent questions that affect what serums I use for your treatment.
The following steps show the order of events in administering the treatment.
- Cleansing: Dead cells are gently removed through cleansing and exfoliating actions.
- Targets oil and debris built-up inside of pores, mild acid helps to loosen congestion.
- Painless suction to remove congestion and blackheads.
- Based on your skin’s condition each day, hydrating and antioxidant serums will be matched to your needs and infused into your skin.
- Based on your goals, add-on options include LED skin phototherapy and a booster serum.
No numbing required and no peeling after. It feels like a cool brush being swept over your face with some gentle tugging. The entire process takes about 30 -50 mins depending on any add on treatments.
Now you can see what came out of your pores. Some people are fascinated by this process; others are repelled by it.
Please use sunscreen after your appointment. This is particularly important here in Jacksonville as we have very high UV index levels due to our latitude from about March thru October. Exfoliated skin burns quicker than you'd think. Your skin will be a bit flushed right after treatment. For most people the redness subsides within an hour. Your skin will be quite plump. You can wear makeup after your visit, though we actually recommend waiting till the next am if possible .
What differentiates ongoing, noticeable change in your skincare from a one-time glow from an individual treatment? Keeping track. We chart the products and processes used during your treatments to ensure that each time you visit us we're working from a plan instead of guessing. Every facial spa treatment we offer in our Jacksonville spa is approached this way, including your HydraFacial. Zero Downtime vs. a Chemical Peel's Recovery
By far, our most frequently asked question is Will my face be red?
Wondering about HydraFacial downtime? We have good news. Aside from some temporary flushing or redness that will fade after only 20 to 30 minutes to reveal skin that appears well-rested and refreshed, HydraFacial has virtually no downtime. You can apply makeup, go to work, to dinner, hit the gym…the whole point is that you can resume your regular activities immediately. All on the same day.
A chemical peel essentially removes the top layer of skin, so expect some flaking (literally). Depending on the strength of the peel, your skin may feel tight or be a little pink for a few days and then it will flake a little more for several more. This isn’t a bad thing, as this is how they work. Just be prepared to plan your schedule accordingly.
what we do about it when we’re in the room.
- HydraFacial. Always. There’s an event in 3 days? HydraFacial.
- A chemical or microneedling series will provide stronger results in treating concerns like stubborn texture or deeper sun damage that has been present for years. We can plan downtime together.
- We suggest a monthly HydraFacial for a consistent glow without being 'out of commission.'
- Not sure which treatment would be best? Let's start with the gentler option and see how your skin reacts.
Another plus for HydraFacials: sun protection. There’s no off-season for the sunshine here in Jacksonville. After a peel, your brand-new, shiny, freshly-peeled skin will require strict avoidance of said sunshine for a period of time. With a HydraFacial you’ll still want to wear sunscreen, but at least you won’t have to baby your face constantly.
We also find that when our client’s are looking for rest and no recovery they usually ask for a peel when they’re looking for a HydraFacial nine times out of ten!

Pairing HydraFacial With Dermaplaning for Maximum Glow
Another popular combo that many of our clients ask about is dermaplaning prior to a HydraFacial. Dermaplaning uses a sterile blade to remove dead cells on the surface of your skin as well as remove any pesky vellus (fine) hairs on your cheeks and jawline. This allows for the exfoliating, extracting, cleansing, and serum-infusing HydraFacial to penetrate your skin without obstruction.
Product order DOES matter because dull buildup + baby hairs create a barrier on top of skin limiting how far your serums will penetrate.
Dermaplaning is an add-on service that changes makeup application. Our favorite part about dermaplaning is watching makeup glide on differently. Foundation stops clinging to peach fuzz on the jawline. The glow is amplified since light bounces off the skin, not into texture. Many times, we'll see a client come in for a HydraFacial by itself, add dermaplaneing the next week, and never separate the two.
There are certain characteristics that good candidates for this add-on have in common. How many of them sound like you?
- Visible peach fuzz can cause makeup to look patchy.
- No active breakouts but skin is dull and flat.
- Downtime is not an option during the upcoming event.
- Areas of dry, flaky skin that don't go away or become smooth with exfoliation at home.
We will only perform a HydraFacial and save the dermaplaning for another day if you have active breakouts, cystic acne, especially if they are open, or cold sores on your face. Dermaplaning over active breakouts or cold sores will only serve to spread bacteria. We can’t exfoliate with a blade until inflammation is no longer present.
Nope! This is a long-held myth and it’s just plain false. Once removed, vellus hair will NOT grow back any thicker or darker. It will grow back the same as it was.
No downtime required, walk out and go to dinner. No one will know you’ve done anything more than get your skin glowing. This treatment is particularly popular here in Jacksonville because our humidity keeps a buildup of perspiration and sunscreen on your face for most of the year.

When to Skip HydraFacial or Choose a Different Treatment
Here’s something most spa websites won’t tell you: HydraFacial is not for everyone, and is not right for all times.
There are some situations where I would NOT want that vortex tip near your face. For example, if you have acute, inflamed, cystic acne, the suctioning/exfoliation can make it angrier. Cold sores, those should be fully healed before we put a pen of any kind on them, ditto fresh sunburns, any kind of rash you can’t explain. Calming/soothing comes first, aggressive treatment later.
There are certain circumstances where we ask that we speak with you before confirming your booking. These include:
- Cystic/Pustular acne flare-ups (inflamed breakouts).
- Are there cold sores, cuts, or any other unhealed skin anywhere on the face?
- They developed a sunburn/windburn during a weekend at the beach.
- Has the client had Advanced CO2 Laser/Chemical Peels/Microneedling
- treatment within the last 2 weeks?
- Pregnancy/nursing, as some of the add-on serum ingredients are not cleared for pregnancy/lactation use
There are deep-set problems that require clinical procedures such as microneedling and Advanced CO2 Laser to help. HydraFacial will not fix the following: Deep scars from acne, Deep lines that are etched around your mouth, Saggy skin on your jawline. HydraFacial is a facial that works on the surface. When you’re staring into the mirror trying to figure out why you’ve got structural issues with your skin, a facial won’t help.
We tell them the same statement each week.
Here’s something else I’ve learned in Jacksonville where it stays hot and muggy well into October. If you’re spending the weekend on the water and love aggressive exfoliation during your treatments, schedule your appointment a few days later. Skin that’s stressed by the sun won’t love aggressive treatments and won’t love you as much for them. Wait a few days and your skin will receive it better and the glow will last longer.
Seasonal visits are optimal for keeping your skin’s barrier healthy, especially if you’re happy with your complexion. If your skin is calm and balanced, there’s no need for you to come in monthly; save your money for something else.
