What Microneedling Treats and Who It Helps

Quick Summary: Microneedling at Be Still Southside starts at $269.

Microneedling works best on acne scarring, sun damage, fine lines, and rough texture, and it helps most adults with realistic goals about gradual improvement. It's not a quick fix for deep wrinkles or active acne breakouts, so knowing your specific concern matters before you book.

We see three kinds of people walk through our door asking about Microneedling. One group has acne scars from years ago, pockmarks or textured patches that never smoothed out. Another group notices sun damage catching up with them, that leathery texture or uneven tone from summers on the water. And the third group just wants their skin to look more even, fewer fine lines, tighter pores, a general refresh.

Acne scarring is often the reason someone finally books. The micro-channels created during treatment prompt your skin to rebuild collagen in areas where scar tissue flattened things out. That process takes time, it's not instant, but it's real repair, not a temporary plump.

  • Acne scarring, including rolling and boxcar scars
  • Sun damage and uneven pigmentation
  • Fine lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead
  • Enlarged pores and rough texture
  • General collagen decline from aging

Good candidates are adults with realistic expectations, no active breakouts, and skin that's healthy enough to handle a controlled injury. If you've got a big event in a week, this isn't your treatment - you'll need recovery time first. We'll walk through your skin history at your first visit and tell you straight if Cosmetic Microneedling Facial or Medical Microneedling fits your goals, or if something else on our menu makes more sense.

Medical Microneedling vs. At-Home Rollers: Know the Difference

We get this question almost every week. Someone bought a roller online, used it a few times, and wants to know if it's doing the same thing we do in the treatment room. Short answer: not really.

At-home rollers use needles around 0.25mm to 0.3mm long. That's shallow enough to reach the top layer of skin, but it barely touches the deeper tissue where real collagen remodeling happens. Medical Microneedling uses a device with needles that go deeper, and every needle is a single-use sterile tip. That depth control is the whole difference. Shallow needling can help with product absorption. It won't touch acne scarring or real texture problems.

Here's what a roller can't do safely: control depth across different zones of the face, adjust for scar tissue versus smooth skin, or sterilize between passes the way a clinical device does. Rollers also roll back and forth, which drags the skin and can cause micro-tears instead of clean punctures. Our device stamps straight down and lifts straight up. Less trauma, more consistent channels.

If your goal is a little glow before a big event, a roller and a good moisturizer might get you there. If you're dealing with acne scars, deep sun damage, or texture that's bothered you for years, that's a different job. You'll want to read our main service page to see how Microneedling fits alongside our other skin treatments and where it makes the most sense for your goals.

So don't toss your roller. Just don't expect it to do a clinical treatment's job.

When Microneedling Isn't the Right Choice

Here's the honest part. Microneedling isn't right for everyone, and we'll tell you that straight during your consult.

Active acne breakouts are the biggest one. If you've got inflamed, pustular acne right now, the needles can spread bacteria across your face. We'll ask you to treat the breakout first, then come back. Same goes for active cold sores, warts, or any open skin infection. Those need to clear before your skin sees a single needle.

Pregnant or breastfeeding? Most providers hold off on Microneedling, ours included, simply because the research on skin healing during pregnancy hormones is thin. It's not worth the risk for a cosmetic treatment.

Blood clotting disorders and certain medications matter too. If you're on blood thinners or have a condition that affects clotting, you'll bruise more and heal slower. We need to know this before we ever touch your skin.

  • Recent Accutane use within the last six months
  • Keloid scarring history in your family
  • Radiation treatment to the face in the past year
  • Uncontrolled diabetes affecting wound healing
  • A big event in the next five days you need to look flawless for

That last one surprises people. Your skin will look pink and feel tight for a day or two after treatment. Book Microneedling too close to a wedding or headshot session, and you'll regret the timing, not the treatment. We see this often during consult season around graduations and holiday parties. If any of this sounds like you, that's not a dead end, it just means we build a different plan first.

What Happens During and After Your Session

Here's what we tell every new guest at our Southside location near the St. Johns Town Center. The appointment itself is calmer than people expect. We numb the skin first, usually thirty minutes before we start. Most folks scroll their phone or just close their eyes.

  • We cleanse your skin and apply a numbing cream to keep things comfortable.
  • Once you're numb, we pass a fine-needle device across your face in controlled passes.
  • We adjust needle depth based on your scarring, texture, or fine lines.
  • After needling, we apply a calming serum or nutrient-rich solution to support healing.
  • You leave with redness similar to a sunburn, that fades over the next day or two.

The whole session runs under an hour for most faces. The redness afterward always looks worse than it feels. Most guests tell us the tightness is the strangest part, not the pain.

Recovery is where the real work happens, though you won't see it happening. Your skin spends the next four to six weeks quietly rebuilding collagen underneath the surface. Expect mild flaking or dryness by day three, then a gradual glow-up as new skin cells turn over. We recommend gentle cleanser, sunscreen, and skipping retinol for about a week.

Jacksonville's humidity works in your favor during healing. Higher moisture in the air helps keep newly treated skin from drying out too fast, which can speed comfort in those first 48 hours.

How Many Sessions and What Drives the Cost

Most people ask us the same thing first. How many sessions will this take? Usually, we're planning a series, not a single visit.

Collagen doesn't rebuild overnight, it takes repeated stimulation over months to really show. A single Microneedling session helps, sure. But acne scarring, deep texture issues, or sun damage built up over years usually need a small series spaced a few weeks apart. Someone with mild texture concerns might need fewer visits. Someone rebuilding after years of sun exposure, common here given Jacksonville's long, sunny stretch of the year, often needs more.

Cost in this industry usually comes down to a few things, not just how many needles pass over your skin.

  • The depth and type of treatment, since medical-grade Microneedling goes deeper than at-home rollers
  • Whether it's paired with add-ons like PRP for extra collagen support
  • How many areas are treated, face only versus face and neck
  • The number of sessions in your recommended series
  • Any skin prep or aftercare products built into your plan

We don't quote a number until we've looked at your skin. That's not a sales tactic - it's just how this works. A plan built for acne scarring looks nothing like one built for fine lines.

Before you book anywhere, ask what's included in the price, how many sessions they recommend for your specific concern, and whether numbing or aftercare products are extra. Those answers tell you more than the number itself.
