10-Point Assessment

Dexa+ Body Scanning in Baymeadows Jacksonville: Your True Body Composition Baseline
What a Dexa+ Body Scan Measures and Who It Is For
Your bathroom scale gives you one number. That number can't tell the difference between a pound of muscle and a pound of fat. So people lose fat, gain muscle, and think they failed because the scale didn't budge. We hear this complaint from new clients almost every week.
The Dexa+ body scan fixes that. You lie still on a padded table, fully clothed, for about ten minutes. There's no tube, no loud noise, nothing to squeeze into. What comes back is a full map of what your body is made of.
Here's what the scan reports:
- Body fat percentage, broken out by arms, legs, and trunk
- Lean muscle mass, so you can see if you're holding onto it
- Visceral fat, the deep belly fat that wraps around your organs
- Bone density, which matters more as you age
- Left-to-right differences that can point to an old injury or imbalance
Now, who's this for? Anyone starting a weight loss program and wanting proof it's working. Anyone on a GLP-1 who's worried about losing muscle along with fat. Lifters who want to know if their bulk is going where they hoped. Women in their 40s and 50s who've never had bone density checked. And folks who just turned 50 and want a number to build from.
A lot of our guests come in after a doctor mentions visceral fat but doesn't measure it. They want the actual figure, not a guess based on waist size.
Not sure if this is what you need? That's pretty common. Most people book it once out of curiosity, then rescan in a few months because the first set of numbers changed how they trained and ate.

Dexa+ Body Scanning in Baymeadows Jacksonville Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- How long does a Dexa+ body scan take?
- Do I need to fast before my scan?
- How is a Dexa+ scan different from a smart scale or calipers?
- Can a Dexa+ scan tell if I'm losing muscle on a GLP-1 program?
- Why hasn't the scale moved even though my clothes fit differently?
- Is a Dexa+ scan worth it if I'm just starting to lose weight?
Deciding Between Dexa+ Scanning and At-Home Methods
Here's the honest answer. Not everybody needs Dexa+ Body Scanning right now.
If you're just starting to move more and eat better, a bathroom scale and a tape measure will tell you plenty for the first month or two. You'll see progress. That's fine. Save your money and keep going.
But the tools most people use at home all share the same weakness, they guess. Smart scales send a small current through your feet and estimate the rest. Drink a big glass of water and the number moves. Sweat through a workout and it moves the other way. Skinfold calipers depend entirely on who's holding them. Two people can pinch the same spot and come out four points apart.
So when does a scan earn its place?
- You're on a GLP-1 program and need to know if you're losing fat or muscle
- The scale hasn't budged in eight weeks but your clothes fit differently
- You want a real number on visceral fat, the deep belly fat around your organs
- You're over 50 and nobody has ever checked your bone density
- You're lifting hard and want proof the muscle is coming back
That last one comes up constantly at our Point Meadows location. Folks training near St. Johns Town Center drop weight, panic, and assume they're shrinking. Nine times out of ten the fat's leaving and the muscle's holding steady. They just couldn't see it.
One more thing worth saying out loud. If you'd rather not know the numbers right now, wait. A scan only helps when you're ready to act on it. There's no prize for measuring early and ignoring the results.

Tracking Body Composition During Weight Loss and GLP-1 Programs
The scale is a liar. Not on purpose, it just can't tell you what left your body. Drop twelve pounds and the number looks great. But if four of those pounds were lean muscle, you're weaker, your metabolism is slower, and the weight comes back easier. This is the single biggest thing we watch for with GLP-1 clients, and it's why Dexa+ Body Scanning belongs in a weight loss plan from day one.
It shows up often. Someone comes in thrilled about their progress, and the scan shows the muscle line dropping faster than the fat line.
That's fixable. But only if you know it's happening.
Here's how we usually run it alongside a medical weight loss program:
- Baseline scan before your first injection or first week on the plan.
- Follow-up scan around the eight to twelve week mark, once the medication has settled in.
- Compare the fat mass and lean mass numbers side by side, not just total weight.
- Adjust protein targets, resistance work, or peptide support based on what the scan shows.
- Re-scan on a set schedule so you can see the trend instead of guessing at it.
Visceral fat is the other number worth your attention. It's the deep fat packed around your organs, and it doesn't always shrink at the same pace as the fat you can pinch. Some people lose four inches off the waist and barely move visceral fat. Others move it fast. And you'd never know which one you are from a mirror.
So if you've been on a GLP-1 for a few months and you feel smaller but softer, that's worth measuring. Not worth worrying about in the dark.

Preparing for Your Scan Appointment
Here's the part most people skip. A scan is only as good as the conditions you show up in. Your body fat percentage doesn't swing four pounds overnight, but water does. So if you scan after a salty dinner and a hard workout, then scan again three months later on an empty stomach, you're comparing two different situations. Not two different bodies.
We'd rather set you up right the first time.
- Come in fasted if you can, or at least three hours after eating.
- Skip hard training the morning of your appointment. Muscle holds extra water after a heavy session.
- Drink normally the day before. Don't chug water and don't cut it.
- Wear soft clothes with no metal. Leggings, a cotton tee, athletic shorts. Leave the underwire bra, zippers, and belt at home.
- Take off your watch, rings, and necklace before you're positioned on the table.
The scan itself takes about ten minutes. You lie flat and still on a padded table. That's it. No tube, no loud noise, no needle. Most guests are surprised at how quiet it is.
One more thing on timing. If you're rescanning, book it at the same time of day as your first one. Morning to morning. It happens often - somebody scans at 8 a.m. in January and 5 p.m. in April, then wonders why the visceral fat number moved oddly. It's usually the clock, not the fat.
Pregnant? We'll hold off on the scan and talk through other ways to track progress. Same goes if you've had contrast imaging or a barium study in the last week - the residue can read as tissue.
Our Point Meadows studio near St. Johns Town Center runs these back to back, so plan on being in and out in under half an hour with your results reviewed.

Verifying Scan Accuracy and Clinical Oversight
A body fat number is only useful if you can trust it. And not every scan you'll find around town holds up. Some handheld devices and bathroom scales guess at body fat using electrical current. Hydration changes the answer. Drink a big glass of water and the reading shifts. That's not a baseline, that's noise.
Dexa+ Body Scanning works differently. It measures tissue directly rather than estimating from a formula. Fat, lean mass, and bone each absorb energy at their own rate. The machine reads those differences region by region. That's why it can tell you what's happening in your trunk versus your left leg.
But the hardware is only half of it.
This comes up often. Someone brings us a printout from somewhere else and has no idea what any of it means. Nobody walked them through it. A scan without interpretation is a receipt, not a plan. Our team is led by medical professionals, and Dexa+ Body Scanning sits inside the Be Still Blueprint for that exact reason - the data feeds a real strategy.
So how do you tell a serious scan from a sales tool? Ask a few direct questions before you book anywhere.
- Who reviews my results with me, and what are their clinical credentials?
- Will I get regional breakdowns, or just one whole-body percentage?
- How should I prep so my follow-up scan is comparable to this one?
- Does this connect to anything else, like bloodwork or metabolic testing?
- Can I keep my scan history to track change over time?
Consistency matters more than people expect. Same machine, same prep, same time of day. That's how you know a change is real and not just a different morning. We schedule follow-ups with that in mind, and we pair scans with Comprehensive Bloodwork or PNOE VO2 Max Testing when the picture needs more depth.
Good data, read by someone who knows what they're looking at. That's the whole point.
