What Float Therapy Actually Does to Your Body

Most people walk in thinking it's just a relaxing bath. It's not.

Float therapy uses a tank filled with about ten inches of water and roughly 1,000 pounds of dissolved Epsom salt. That concentration is so dense your body floats completely on top, no effort required. Your muscles stop working. Your joints stop bearing weight. And your nervous system, which has been running at full speed all day, finally gets to slow down.

Here's what's actually happening while you float. The magnesium in the Epsom salt absorbs through your skin, and magnesium plays a direct role in muscle relaxation and stress regulation. Your cortisol levels drop. Your heart rate settles. The sensory input your brain normally processes every second, light, sound, gravity, temperature, basically disappears. According to research published by the Float Research Collective, regular float therapy sessions have shown measurable reductions in anxiety, blood pressure, and perceived pain levels.

People come in from Riverside, Avondale, Five Points and all corners of Jacksonville carrying tension they don't even realize they're holding. They float for 60 or 90 minutes and walk out looking like a different person. Looser. Quieter. More themselves.

The physical effects include:

  • Deep muscle and joint decompression from zero-gravity floating
  • Reduced inflammation and soreness from magnesium absorption
  • Lower cortisol and a measurable shift in stress hormones
  • Improved sleep quality in the days following a session

But the mental side is just as real. Without sensory input pulling your attention outward, your brain shifts into a theta wave state according to The Conversation. That's the same brainwave pattern you hit right before sleep, the one most people almost never reach while awake. It's where deep mental clarity lives. Some people have breakthroughs. Some people just rest in a way they haven't in years.

And no, you don't have to do anything special to make it work. Your body handles it. You just have to show up.

Who Benefits Most from a Float Session

Most people who walk through our door in Jacksonville weren't sure they "needed" float therapy. They just knew something wasn't working. They were tired but couldn't sleep. Wired but couldn't focus. Sore but couldn't recover fast enough.  Review Be Still's Jacksonville Wellness Treatments.

Float therapy isn't one thing for one type of person. It works on the body and the mind at the same time, so the range of people who benefit is genuinely wide. That said, some folks get results that stop them in their tracks.

People Who See the Biggest Shifts

Here's who we hear from most after a session:

  • Athletes and active people dealing with muscle soreness, joint fatigue, or slow recovery
  • Professionals carrying chronic stress who can't seem to fully decompress
  • People with anxiety or racing thoughts who struggle to quiet their mind
  • Anyone dealing with back pain, neck tension, or pressure on their joints
  • People who haven't slept well in months and are desperate for real rest

The magnesium in the Epsom salt solution absorbs through your skin during the float. That alone does a lot of heavy lifting for sore muscles and inflammation.

But the mental side is just as real. According to research published in the journal PLOS ONE, flotation therapy produced significant reductions in anxiety and stress while improving mood and sleep quality. We've watched people walk out of the tank quieter, slower, and visibly lighter than when they walked in.

If you're in Riverside or Murray Hill and you're running on fumes, this is worth your time. Not as a luxury. As a reset.

Now, float therapy isn't for everyone in every situation. If you're claustrophobic, we talk through that before you ever step in. Most people are surprised by how open and spacious the environment actually feels. But we'd rather you know upfront than be caught off guard.

People who pair float therapy with other wellness services from our Jacksonville Wellness Treatments tend to notice the most consistent results over time. The float does something nothing else quite replicates, it removes every sensory demand on your nervous system all at once. Your body doesn't have to fight anything. It just recovers.

That's rare. And for the right person, it's everything.

How to Prepare for Your First Float

Most people who walk through our door in Jacksonville have never floated before. That's completely fine. But a little prep goes a long way toward making your first session feel effortless instead of awkward.

Skip caffeine for at least four hours before you arrive. Seriously. A wired mind fights the float the whole time, and you'll spend your session chasing calm instead of finding it. Eat something light an hour or two beforehand. Floating on a full stomach isn't comfortable, but floating hungry is distracting.

Here's what to do before you step into the tank:

  1. Don't shave or wax within 12 hours of your session. The salt concentration is intense, and fresh skin will sting.
  2. Remove contact lenses before you arrive, or bring your case.
  3. Wash off any heavy lotions, perfumes, or oils at home. We provide a full shower here, but starting clean saves time.
  4. Leave your phone in the locker. We mean it. The whole point is disconnection.
  5. Arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first visit so we can walk you through everything without rushing.

New floaters almost always spend the first 15 minutes trying to "do something." You don't do anything. You just float. The tank handles the rest. Your body will find neutral buoyancy on its own because of the Epsom salt solution. You won't sink. You won't tip over. You'll just... stop fighting gravity.

If you're coming from Ortega or anywhere across Jacksonville, plan your drive so you're not rushing in stressed. Walking in frantic and expecting instant calm is a tough ask. Give yourself a buffer.

And if you're claustrophobic? Tell us before you book. The float environment is more open than most people expect, but we want to set you up right from the start. We've guided hundreds of first-timers through that exact concern.

One more thing. Don't set expectations for what the float "should" feel like. Some people feel profound stillness on session one. Others just feel really, really rested. Both are wins.

What Happens During and After Your Float Session

A lot of people walk in not knowing what to expect. That's completely normal. We'll walk you through everything before you ever step into the tank.

You'll start with a quick rinse in the private shower. Then you step into the float pod, which holds about ten inches of water loaded with roughly 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt. That concentration is so dense your body floats automatically. No effort. No holding yourself up. Just weightlessness.

The session itself runs about 60 to 90 minutes. Here's what the experience actually looks like, in order:

  1. You close the pod and settle into the water. The lights fade. Soft music plays for the first few minutes, then goes quiet.
  2. Your body stops fighting gravity. Most people feel tension leave their neck and lower back within the first ten minutes.
  3. Your mind slows down. This is where Float Therapy does its real work. Cortisol drops, your nervous system shifts gears, and a lot of people hit a state that's somewhere between sleep and full awareness.
  4. Music returns near the end to bring you back gently. There's no jarring alarm, no rush.
  5. You shower again to rinse the salt off, then take your time getting ready in the private space we provide.

Client after client comes out of the pod quieter than when they went in. Not tired. Just settled. There's a difference.

The post-float feeling is real, and it tends to last. Most Jacksonville clients describe a calm that carries into the evening and sometimes the next day. Some notice better sleep that night. Others feel mental clarity they haven't had in months. According to research published in the journal PLOS ONE, a single float session reduced anxiety and improved mood in study participants.

If you're coming from somewhere like San Marco or Downtown after a long workday, that post-float window is worth protecting. We always suggest keeping the hour after your session light. No intense meetings. No rushing.

And if it's your first time, don't worry about doing it "right." There's nothing to do. That's the whole point.

Float Therapy Paired with Other Wellness Services

Float therapy works on its own. But the biggest results show up when people combine it with something else.

Your nervous system doesn't flip a switch the moment you step out of the float pod. It takes time to fully settle. That's why pairing float therapy with other services on the same visit, or across the same week, can take what you feel from good to genuinely transformative. Clients coming in from Avondale and all across Jacksonville tell us this consistently.

The combination we recommend most often is float therapy followed by our Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna. Here's the logic: the float drops your cortisol and quiets your mind. The infrared sauna then works on your body at a cellular level, using gentle heat to relax muscles and support detoxification. One resets your head, the other finishes the job on your body. Most clients who try this once come back for it every time.

Sound Healing is another natural match. Our Vibroacoustic Sound Healing bed uses low-frequency sound to calm the nervous system, it picks up right where the float pod leaves off. If you've ever floated and then felt a little jarred stepping back into noise and light, sound healing acts like a buffer. A softer landing.

Red Light Therapy is worth mentioning too. After float therapy, your body is in a deeply relaxed, receptive state. Red light at that point supports cellular repair and reduces inflammation. It's a quiet session, no effort required, and it layers well with the stillness you've already built.

Some of our Jacksonville clients also book float therapy the same day as a massage. The float loosens the mental grip on tension first, the massage addresses what's left in the tissue. It's a different sequence than most people expect, but the results speak for themselves.

Not sure which combination makes sense for where you are right now? Give us a call and we'll help you figure it out, no pressure, just a real conversation about what your body actually needs.
