What Sensory Deprivation Actually Does to Your Body and Mind

First-timers usually have no idea what to expect. They've heard the term Sensory Deprivation and picture something intense. What actually happens is the opposite of intense.

You float in a pod filled with about ten inches of water and roughly 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt dissolved into it. That concentration is dense enough to hold your body completely on the surface without any effort. You're not swimming. You're not holding yourself up. You're just floating, weightless, with zero input from the outside world.

Here's what that does to your body. When your muscles don't have to fight gravity, they stop firing. The tension you've been carrying in your neck, your lower back, your shoulders, it releases. We see this every single week. People come in holding stress in their bodies that they didn't even realize was there, and they float out looking like a different person.

The science behind it is straightforward. According to research published in the Journal PLOS ONE, float therapy reduces cortisol levels and anxiety in participants after just one session. Cortisol is the stress hormone that keeps your nervous system on high alert. When it drops, your body finally gets to rest in a way that even sleep doesn't always deliver.

Your brain does something interesting too. Without light, sound, or physical sensation coming in, it stops processing external input and starts doing its own thing. Many Jacksonville clients describe a deep meditative state they couldn't reach on their own. Some experience vivid mental clarity. Some fall asleep. Both are completely fine.

The Epsom salt itself matters here. Magnesium absorbs through your skin during the float. And magnesium is something most people are deficient in, it plays a direct role in muscle recovery, sleep quality, and mood regulation.

A few things sensory deprivation is known to support:

  • Reduced muscle soreness and joint pressure
  • Lower anxiety and mental fatigue
  • Improved sleep quality in the days following a session
  • A noticeable drop in mental "noise" and racing thoughts

It's not a trend. It's physiology. Your body responds to stillness because it was built to need it.

Who Benefits Most from a Float Session

We see a pretty wide range of people walk through our doors in Jacksonville. But certain folks get the most out of sensory deprivation, and it's worth knowing if you're one of them.

The person we see most often is someone running on empty. They're not sick. They're not in crisis. They're just carrying too much for too long, and their body has started keeping score.

Here's who tends to respond the strongest:

  • People with chronic stress or anxiety who can't seem to fully switch off
  • Athletes and active people dealing with sore muscles or slow recovery
  • Anyone with persistent tension in the neck, shoulders, or lower back
  • People struggling with sleep quality or racing thoughts at night
  • Professionals in high-pressure jobs who rarely get true mental quiet

We get a lot of guests from the Southside area. Many of them work long hours, commute, and haven't had a full hour of uninterrupted stillness in months. That's not an exaggeration. Most people haven't.

According to research published in the journal BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, float therapy showed measurable reductions in stress, anxiety, and muscle pain across multiple study groups. That lines up exactly with what we hear from guests after their first session.

But it's not just stress relief. Athletes use float sessions to speed up recovery between training days. The magnesium absorbed through the skin during a float helps reduce inflammation, and the zero-gravity environment takes pressure off joints and connective tissue. We hear this one every single week from runners and gym regulars in Jacksonville who started floating and didn't want to stop.

And people dealing with sleep issues? They often report the deepest sleep of their week on float nights. Something about resetting the nervous system that thoroughly just carries over.

Not sure if this sounds like you? Give us a call and we'll talk it through.

First-timers are always welcome. You don't need experience with meditation or any kind of wellness background. You just need an hour and a willingness to be still.

How to Prepare for Your First Float at Be Still Wellness

Coming in for the first time? That's completely normal. We see first-timers every single week, and a little prep goes a long way toward making your session everything it should be.

The biggest thing? Don't overthink it.

Here's what we tell every new guest at our Jacksonville location before they step into the float pod for the first time.

What to Do Before You Arrive

  1. Eat a light meal about 60-90 minutes before your session. Too full feels uncomfortable. Too empty and your stomach will distract you.
  2. Skip the caffeine that day if you can. Coffee keeps your nervous system wired, and the whole point is to let it settle.
  3. Don't shave or wax within 24 hours of your float. The Epsom salt solution is highly concentrated, it'll sting on fresh skin.
  4. Arrive with clean hair, or plan to shower here first. We have everything you need on-site.
  5. Leave your contacts out. Bring your glasses instead.

Simple stuff. But it makes a real difference in how quickly you settle into the float.

What to Expect Once You're In

You'll shower before entering the pod. Then you float. The water is skin temperature, around 93-94 degrees, so after a few minutes you won't feel where your body ends and the water begins. That's the point.

A lot of first-timers spend the first 15-20 minutes just getting comfortable. That's okay. We always say: don't fight it. You don't have to meditate. You don't have to do anything. Just float.

And if you're someone who struggles with enclosed spaces, talk to us before you book. We can leave the pod door open. The light stays off if you want it to, or stays on. You're always in control.

Guests in the Southside area especially tend to come in mid-week, squeezed between work and everything else. We get it. That's exactly who sensory deprivation is built for. Ninety minutes in the pod can feel like a full night of sleep, your body knows how to use the quiet if you let it.

After your float, sit in our recovery lounge. Don't rush back out to Jacksonville traffic. Give yourself 10-15 minutes to land before you drive.

What Happens During a Sensory Deprivation Session Jacksonville

Never done this before? That's completely normal. We walk every first-time guest through the whole process before they ever step into the tank.

Here's how a session actually goes, start to finish:

  1. You shower first. We ask you to rinse off before your float. It keeps the water clean and helps your body start to relax before you even get in.
  2. You step into the tank. The water is skin-temperature, around 93-94 degrees. It doesn't feel hot or cold. It almost disappears.
  3. You float effortlessly. The water holds about 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt. You can't sink. Your body just lifts.
  4. You close the door or pod lid. Darkness. Silence. No light, no sound, no gravity pulling on your joints.
  5. You float for 60 to 90 minutes. Most guests lose track of time completely. That's not a bad thing.
  6. You shower again after. Rinse the salt off, take your time. We're not rushing you out.

The first 10 minutes are usually the adjustment period. Your mind is still running through your to-do list. We see this every single session with new guests. But somewhere around minute 15, something shifts. The nervous system stops bracing. The body stops holding tension it didn't even know it was carrying.

Jacksonville summers are brutal on the body. Heat, humidity, long days on your feet or behind a screen. By the time most people walk through our door on the Southside, they're running on empty. The tank gives your system a real break, not just a nap.

And here's the thing most people don't expect: the mental quiet. No inputs means your brain stops processing and starts restoring. Research published by the Float Research Collective shows that even a single session can measurably reduce cortisol and anxiety levels. One session. That's not nothing.

But the physical side is just as real. The magnesium in the Epsom salt absorbs through your skin. Tight muscles let go. Your spine decompresses. Joints that carry weight all day finally get a break from it.

You come out slower. Quieter. That's the point.

The Float Stack: Pairing Sensory Deprivation with Other On-Site Services

Most people come in for sensory deprivation and leave wondering why they didn't book the whole afternoon. That's not an accident. We see it every single week, someone floats for the first time, walks out feeling like a different person, and immediately asks what else we have.

Here's the thing. Your nervous system just got quiet for the first time in months. That's the perfect window to layer in something else.

A lot of our Jacksonville clients pair their float with a session in our Full Spectrum Sunlighten Infrared Sauna. The sauna goes first. It loosens tight muscles and gets your circulation moving, so by the time you step into the float tank, your body is already halfway there. The two work together in a way that's hard to explain until you've felt it.

Sound Healing is another one we recommend stacking. Our vibroacoustic Sound Healing bed uses low-frequency vibration to calm the mind from the outside in. Float after that, and the stillness hits differently. We call this combination the Nervous System Reset, and it's become one of the most requested experiences we offer.

Some of our Southside clients build a full half-day around their float. Here's how that typically looks:

  1. Start with a 30-minute Infrared Sauna session to warm and loosen the body
  2. Move into a 60-minute sensory deprivation float
  3. Finish with Red Light Therapy to support cellular recovery

That sequence isn't random. Each step builds on the last. The sauna opens you up, the float resets you, and the red light supports what your body just did.

And if you want to add something for your skin while you're here, we can work in a HydraFacial or a session of IV therapy around your float. The float won't interfere with those, we just time things right so your skin barrier is protected.

Not sure what to stack? Just tell us how you're feeling when you walk in. Stressed, sore, foggy, burned out. We'll point you in the right direction. That's what we're here for.
